Photographs
The theme is built around photographs: a full-bleed room in every hero, a picture for every service and every section of the card, plates set large, portraits, a mosaic of the room. This page says where the demo's pictures come from, what you see without them, and where each of yours goes.
The demo's photographs are not in your download
The Mireille demo uses 60 photographs and 2 drawings, 62 files. They are:
- AI-generated, to one art direction: one room, morning light and warm night light, no text in any image, no real people and no brands;
- hosted on our server, under
https://tailthemes.com/wordpress/demo/table-and-type/v3/; - not inside any zip: not the theme, not the plugin, not the package;
- not included in your licence. They are there so the demo looks like the demo. Replace every one with your own photographs before you launch. Credits lists them.
How the import fetches them
The demo's content file ships inside the companion plugin. Each of its 62 media records names its file on our server, and when you press Import:
- your server requests each file from ours, over HTTPS, and saves it into your own Media Library, with its alternative text;
- WordPress generates its usual sizes;
- the importer points every page, dish, service, section, slip and post at the new local copy.
That is the whole exchange. It runs once, from your server and not from a visitor's browser, and the request carries nothing about your site. After the import nothing is hot-linked: every picture on your pages is served from your own uploads folder.
When the photographs do not arrive
If your server cannot reach ours (no outbound HTTPS, a firewall, a timeout) the import still completes: every record is there and every page is built.
- An image whose file did not arrive is drawn as the theme's own stand-in plate for that picture, a tinted field at the right proportions, rather than as a broken image.
- Run the import again once the connection works. The media that is missing is fetched, and the real photographs replace the stand-ins without any edit.
The stand-in plates
With nothing imported, every pattern still looks composed. The theme ships one small SVG for each
of the 60 photographs, under assets/images/plates/v3/, named for the picture it stands in for
(room-01-morning-wide.svg, dish-05-steak-frites.svg): a warm field by day, an ink one by night.
Apart from the theme's screenshot, stand-in plates are the only images inside the theme.
When you insert a pattern on a site of your own, you see these plates. Select each and Replace it with your photograph.
Where each photograph is set
| Photograph | Where you set it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A hero, a band, a portrait, the room mosaic, a title banner | On the page: select the Image or Cover block and Replace | Set the Cover's focal point so the subject survives the phone crop |
| The footer's strip of six | Appearance › Editor › Patterns › Template parts › Footer | |
| A service's photograph | Services › the service › Featured image, and Service details › Focal point | It is the picture beside the served card on the home page when that service is being served |
| A section's photograph | Dishes › Sections › the section › Photograph | It opens the section on the full card at /menu/. The drinks section has none in the demo: it is a printed list |
| A dish's row thumbnail | Dishes › the dish › Featured image, and Dish details › Focal point | The small plate at the end of its row |
| A featured dish's plate | Dish details › Featured and Plate photograph | Below |
| A slip's photograph | Slips › the slip › Featured image | Taped up beside the slip in Today's changes |
| A journal post's photograph | Posts › the post › Featured image | Its card in every list, and its title banner |
| The 404's picture, the two background drawings | Settings › Site details |
Section photographs
Each section of the card (Viennoiseries, Plats, Desserts du soir) can open on a photograph. On the section's own screen, under Dishes › Sections, choose Photograph. Eleven of the demo's twelve sections have one.
Dish photographs, and the Featured flag
A dish can carry two different pictures, and they do two different jobs:
| Field | Where it prints | |
|---|---|---|
| The thumbnail | Featured image, with the focal point | The small plate in the dish's row on the card |
| The plate | Dish details › Plate photograph, a square | Set large in the band of four plates on /menu/, when the dish is Featured |
Tick Dish details › Featured to put a dish in the four-plate band. The band takes the featured dishes in the order the day serves them, the earliest service first, and prints each one's photograph, the service it belongs to, its name, its line and its price from the record. Flag as many dishes as the band has frames: four. A frame with no featured dish behind it keeps the words and the stand-in it was saved with.
A dish set large can leave its row without a thumbnail, which is how the demo does it: nine dishes carry a row thumbnail, four others are featured.
With the plugin off the band shows what was saved in the page, which is the same band with typed words.
The focal point
Dishes and services carry a focal point: two numbers between 0 and 1, or a click on the picture in the editing screen. It is the point a crop must keep, and it is what lets one photograph serve a square thumbnail and a wide band.
Alternative text
Every demo photograph arrives with alternative text describing what is in the frame. When you replace one, write your own: Media › the image › Alternative Text, or the Image block's own field. A record's photograph (a dish, a section, a slip) is printed with the alternative text its attachment carries.
Size and loading
The theme asks WordPress for the size it needs and lets WordPress build the srcset. Only the
first photograph of a page — the hero, or the title banner — loads at once; every other one is
lazy-loaded, so a home with thirty photographs does not fetch thirty to draw its first screen.
Upload photographs at about 2400 pixels on the long side. Larger files are not shown larger, they
only take longer to upload.
