The three homes and the pages
The demo is one café with three home pages and thirteen inner pages behind one header. Every one of them is an ordinary WordPress page (or, for the journal, WordPress's own posts) built from the theme's patterns, so every one can be rearranged, rewritten or deleted in the editor.
The three homes
One house at three hours. Each home is a page pattern under Patterns › Table and Type › Pages, and the import creates a page from each.
| Home | Page slug | Its name in the header | Made for | How it opens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The all-day café | home (the front page) |
All day | A house that is open from breakfast to supper | The room in the morning, full-bleed, with the day's slip taped over the corner |
| The bakery-café | home-bakery |
Morning counter | A house whose regulars come for the oven | The counter at eight, then the bakes and their hours |
| The evening bistro | home-bistro |
After dark | A house chosen for its evenings | The room at night on the dark ground, then the souper card |
They share every record: the same menu, hours, slips and booking rows. What differs is the order and the weight of the bands.
| Band | All-day | Bakery | Bistro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hero: photograph, heading, Get directions, the open line, the taped slip | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Served card: the service being served, with its slips | 2 | 5 | 9 |
| Today's changes: the day's slips at full size, on the red | 3 | 4 | 6 |
| The day in five services: one photograph per service, with its days and hours | 4 | 6 | 10 |
| A dish, told | 5 | 7 (a bake) | 7 (a souper dish) |
| On the grinder: the coffee and the bakes | 6 | 3 | |
| The counter this morning: the bakes board | 2 | ||
| Le souper, the evening card | 2 | ||
| The carafe list | 3 | ||
| Night band (all-day) · goûter band on the red (bakery) · night strip (bakery) | 7 | 8 and 12 | |
| The kitchen: three people | 8 | 9 | 4 |
| Book a table, over a laid table | 9 | 10 | 8 |
| The room, morning to night | 10 | 11 | 5 |
| Visit, beside the door | 11 | 13 | 11 (after dark) |
| From the journal: the three newest posts | 12 | 14 | 12 |
Each home carries one h1 (in its hero) and one filled action, Get directions, in the hero and
again in the visit band. The header's bordered Book a table stands above all of it.
Making another home the front page
- Settings › Reading › Your homepage displays › A static page.
- Homepage: choose
Morning counterorAfter darkinstead ofHome. Save Changes. - The line of three homes in the header is three links typed in the header part. Open Appearance › Editor › Patterns › Template parts › Header, and either point them at your own pages or delete the row. It appears three times, once per screen width: the line above the bar on a desktop, a row under it on a tablet, and the last group of the menu panel on a phone.
- Delete the two home pages you are not using, or keep one as a seasonal page.
There is no front-page template. The home is a page on the Page without title template, set as the front page in Reading, which is what lets you swap it, duplicate it and reorder its bands without touching a template.
Building a home of your own
Pages › Add New Page, choose the Page without title template in the page's Template
panel, and insert bands from Patterns › Table and Type › Sections, or start from one of the
three page patterns and drag. Keep exactly one hero, because the hero holds the page's h1.
The thirteen inner pages
All of them open on a title banner. The header reaches every one; the columns say where.
| Page | Slug | Under which route | Built from |
|---|---|---|---|
| The card | menu |
Menu | The numbered index with the dietary filter, four plates photographed large, the five services as stacked bands with a photograph over every section, the drinks on the red |
| Drinks and the grinder | drinks |
Menu | The espresso and the two bags on the grinder, the bar hour by hour, the whole drinks card, the evening list on the night band, a closing band |
| Visit | visit |
Visit | The week as a card with today marked, the ways in, the house rules per service, the evening on the night ground, the address and the way to it |
| Questions | faq |
Visit | Six topics in photographs with the short answer, the long answers in disclosures, allergies on the red band |
| Contact | contact |
Visit | The telephone, the email and the door as three cards, who reads what, the evening on the night ground |
| Book a table | book |
Book | The two services that take tables, the booking policy with its slip, the booking flow and the enquiry, what happens after you press |
| Groups and private dining | groups |
Book | Three ways to bring a group, two set menus, how an enquiry goes, the enquiry itself, five questions |
| The kitchen | the-kitchen |
The kitchen | How the kitchen works, a full band for each of the three people, the day from the oven to the last candle |
| Journal | journal (the posts page) |
Journal | The posts as photographed cards, the newest laid wide on the first page |
| From the kitchen | a category archive | Journal | The same cards, for one category, on its own night banner |
| The room | a category archive | Journal | The same |
| About the house | about |
About | The story, the day room and the evening room, the corner year by year, four figures, details, a closing band |
| Notices | notices |
About | The privacy notice as a record, then the questions a reader asks. The one page you edit rather than delete. See Privacy |
Two more are designed and are not menu destinations:
- A journal post (
singletemplate): the post's own featured photograph as its banner, the text at a reading measure, tags, previous and next, comments, then three more notes from the journal. A post with no featured image gets the night band instead. - Page not found (
404template): the room at closing, what the house serves at every hour, the week, and the ways back. It states no hour, because a not-found page is built once and cached.
And one is for you, not for a visitor: style-guide holds the token sheet and one specimen of
every section. It is in no menu. Delete it before you launch.
Title banners
Every inner page opens on the same shape: a photograph or the night band, a breadcrumb
(Home / the page), the page's title in the display serif (the page's only h1), one line of
lede, and optionally a small slip taped to the corner that carries the page's one fact.
| Ground | Pages in the demo |
|---|---|
| A photograph | Drinks, Visit, Book, Groups, The kitchen, About, Questions, Contact, a journal post with a featured image, the 404 |
| The night band | The card, Notices, the journal index, a category archive, a post with no featured image |
On a page, the banner is ordinary blocks at the top of the page content: a Cover (or a Group on the night ground), a paragraph for the breadcrumb, a heading, a paragraph, and the slip. To change it:
- the title, the lede and the slip's line: type over them. The slip on a banner is a typed note, not a record; it does not expire by itself. Delete the slip group if the page has nothing to say there. The card is the exception: with Table and Type Core active the slip on its banner is the newest slip that is up, as on a home's hero, and the banner is bare on a day without one. What you can type there is the line a site without the plugin shows in its place;
- the photograph: select the Cover and Replace. Set its focal point so the words stay on the dark side of the picture, and look at it at phone width before you publish;
- from a photograph to the night band, or back: insert the page pattern of a page that has the other kind and copy its banner, or remove the Cover's image and give the group the Night background with the Night foreground text colour.
The journal's banners live in the templates (home, archive, single), so they are edited in
Appearance › Editor › Templates. A post's banner photograph is simply the post's Featured
image.
The header
Appearance › Editor › Patterns › Template parts › Header. See Styles, header, footer and patterns for every slot. In short: a thin line of house facts (the open status, the street, the three homes, the telephone) over the bar: the wordmark, six routes with the inner pages under them as dropdowns, the light/dark control, and a bordered Book a table.
The journal
The journal is WordPress's own posts: Posts in the admin menu, two categories in the demo, eight notes signed by three people.
- The posts page is the page set at Settings › Reading › Posts page (
journalin the demo). - A post's card photograph and its banner are its Featured image. A post without one keeps its place in every list as a pinned slip.
- The name under a post is its Byline, a box on the post's editing screen, when you fill it; the account's display name when you do not. See the byline.
- The home's From the journal band is a Query Loop of the three newest posts. It needs no plugin.
